M&S Colchester store from outside

Marks & Spencer, the UK branded retail chain, are deep in the process of updating their real estate portfolio, making their stores more attractive and relevant to todays shoppers.

Building new stores running the full line including clothing, home and food products formed a central part of their strategy of transformation. The new store format is proving to be a winner with clear improvements in profitable baskets

As part of the new store roll-out, Marks & Spencer have elected to work with Care Spaces to install Changing Places toilets within the floorplans of their stores.

Working with the architect, the M&S design team, and the main contractors, Care Spaces delivered this facility into the new development at Stane Road in Colchester.

Stand-out design

The decor of the room aligns with the other customer facilities and features a non-slip vinyl floor, with porcelain tiles to 2300mm and a painted wall above. The space is created within the store during fitout phase, and built with an engineered timber frame with plywood pattressing to give maximum strength, with specific load-bearing elements placed in design stage.

The fitout of the store happens in a very short window and we support at critical junctions, meeting with subcontractors on site to ensure that services are brought into the room at the right points.

Considerate installation

Installation and commissioning take 2-3 days, generally within 2 weeks of the store handover to the client. This is a busy phase for the build, and coordination with other trades is critical, as well as paying close attention to health and safety both of our operatives and those working around us.

In the final week before handover, we meet with the store operation staff to provide them with an introduction to how the room is designed to be used, how to support their customers in the best way, troubleshooting simple errors with the equipment, and provide them with a contact should they need assistance in the future.

Overall, we feel that the provision of such a facility within the flagship stores of a true British brand is a testament to the real value that a Changing Places can bring to a retail environment.
