The service-user is a male adult who lives with his wife and son in their family home. Having lived the majority of his life fully mobile, he devastatingly had the lower part of his leg crushed and now uses a prosthetic limb and so he received support to make adaptations to his home so he could continue to live an independent life.

One of the main rooms in the house that just wasn’t working for him was the bathroom. It was a small room that contained a toilet, sink and bath. Unfortunately, the user just couldn’t access the bath with his prosthetic limb and the toilet was at an inappropriate height, making it difficult for him to get on and off easily. This was making what should be a straightforward task very difficult for him and impacting his daily life.

Working in collaboration

Care Spaces were approached by a private Occupational Therapist (OT) to design the wet room specifically to meet the user’s needs. Once the design had been approved by the OT and the user himself, we set to work to transform the space. Bringing in our trusted contractors, we began by stripping out the bathroom and moving the electrics and plumbing. We then dug up the floor to allow room for a much-needed level-access shower to be fitted.

Transforming an unusable space

Next was the installation stage where we worked closely with our key partners to ensure the right equipment was selected. In order to make sure the compact space worked for the user, we installed:

  • A level-access shower
  • A shower seat for when fatigue sets in and to support any future changes
  • Completely waterproof and level non-slip flooring
  • Specifically placed safety grab rails
  • An accessible toilet
  • An accessible basin

A room suitable for all the family

Our service-user now has a wet room fit for his needs. He is able to wash independently and toilet with ease. What makes this residential adaptation even more special is the user’s son has a disability and so the wet-room will be extremely beneficial for him also. As he grows older and his needs change, the family has an incredible wet room that has been built to last.
