How this shopping centre went from ‘ticking the box’ to excelling with fully accessible Changing Places facility.
Glasgow Fort is a vibrant shopping and leisure ark in Glasgow. With millions of diverse shoppers visiting every year, the shopping centre is committed to disability inclusion. In July 2023, Glasgow Fort partnered with CareSpaces to enhance its accessible facilities and offer a better customer experience.
Stepping up to meet the high standards
Glasgow Fort’s parent company, British Land, holds the Disability Smart accreditation, so standards were always going to be high for this refurb. While Glasgow Fort did have accessible facilities in place, they needed to level up their offering to demonstrate that disability inclusion is an integral part of their business culture and processes.
When shopping centres don’t invest in high-standard accessible facilities, they risk delivering a poor customer experience. Glasgow Fort was determined to be known as one of the most accessible and inclusive places in the region.
Working to a tight deadline
It’s never easy to start a project when you’re under considerable pressure to deliver within a tight time frame. However, we stepped in to manage everything from the design to the installation and completed the work on time and to an exceptional standard.
Overcoming limitations
As with every project, allocated spaces challenge us to adapt. We have to consider everything from size to existing room structure.
The allocated space lacked a steel structure for the ceiling hoist. But by mounting the hoist onto a slim-line wall post system, we overcame this initial hurdle. The design incorporated state-of-the-art facilities including a height-adjustable mobile shower trolley and a comfort-height toilet.
