The motorway service station at Hythe on the M20 in Kent is a busy destination for travellers going to and from the continent via the Eurotunnel or ferry port at Dover. Since being acquired by ChannelPorts in 2023, the new owners planned to make significant investment in the customer facilities and made contact with our team to make early enquiries about a Changing Places toilet.

Our project consultants made a visit to site to meet their project team, and discussed the requirements of a Changing Places toilet. We surveyed the proposed location and helped our client with early decisions on the specification of equipment, door location, drainage etc.

The intervening period saw a few changes in the the room location, but once the main customer toilets had been upgraded ChannelPorts were ready to deliver their accessible facilities.

The new toilets, located between the mens and ladies toilets, comprises two accessible WCs and a Changing Places toilet.

As the main contractors started on the new suite of rooms, we set to and drew up some plans and elevations for the tradesmen to work to. We provided them with the critical dimensions, and met with the plumbers to talk through our requirements.

The client sought guidance on the colour scheme for the room and we were able to work with their preferred supplier to find a satin-finish wall cladding which would work well with the equipment whilst ensuring the correct visual contrast between walls and floor.

Once the room has been made ready, our installation team went to site and completed the fit-out. With final connections and commissioning complete we were able to carry out the registration visit on behalf of the client.

The finished room looks fantastic and is now ready to welcome visitors on their travels!
