Specialist bathroom fit-out for a young student starting school
A young student with Achondroplasia was due to start school in Scarborough, requiring an accessible bathroom with bespoke adaptations. The project demanded rapid turnaround to ensure the facility was ready in time for his first week in September. CareSpaces was commissioned to design, install, and complete the building works under stringent time constraints.
The project brief required CareSpaces to transform an inaccessible bathroom into a fully functional, future-ready space that would promote independence. This was not just for one particular current student but to make the facilities accessible for the future.
The priorities included installing specialist sanitary equipment at the correct heights, reconfiguring the bathroom layout to address accessibility issues, and incorporating future-proofing measures such as strengthening and boxing-out to allow for grab rail installation at a later stage.
CareSpaces delivered a solution that combined specialist equipment, structural works, and precise project management. The installation included an AquaClean Mera Care toilet, offering bidet-style hygiene to enhance both comfort and independence. A Plus Powered Basin Bracket was fitted with an extended 500 mm vertical travel, surpassing standard specifications, meeting a wider range of reach requirements.
The building works involved a full reconfiguration of the bathroom space to ensure accessibility from the outset. Structural improvements included bespoke boxing behind the toilet, allowing for the straightforward addition of grab rails when needed. The team also prepared the infrastructure to accommodate further assistive devices, ensuring the space was adaptable to evolving needs.
CareSpaces worked in close coordination with the school to align every stage of design, delivery, and installation with the academic calendar. Through consistent communication and careful scheduling, the team was able to complete the project within a tight deadline.
Outcome
The bathroom was fully operational by the start of the new school term, offering the student a fully accessible, dignified, and independent environment. The extended-range basin bracket allows use by individuals of different statures, promoting long-term flexibility for future users. Structural provisions such as concealed boxing guarantee readiness for further assistive installations, ensuring adaptability as needs evolve.
