David Lloyd Leisure is a well-known chain of health clubs that offer premier gyms and fitness clubs across Europe, with 130 clubs in nine countries. They recently opened a new health club, specially designed for fitness and wellness in Shawfair, Edinburgh.

Tight deadlines to meet

Just six weeks prior to hand over, the contractor for the build contacted CareSpaces by Wealden Rehab to install a Changing Places facility. Our team has worked with Pellikaan, a Dutch contractor, for a long time. They trust us to finished projects on schedule because they know we are efficient and dependable.

In Scotland, it’s not required to have a Changing Places toilet in new buildings. however, a Building Inspector insisted on including one in the health and fitness centre, making it accessible to everyone.

Creating a space

As the Changing Places toilet wasn’t part of the original plans, space has to be allocated. The changing area for the spa was halved in size to make way for the new facility. Our team of experts then set to design the room and layout of equipment to get the required approval from the Scottish charity PAMIS, the lead organisation in Scotland for Changing Places. Once approved, we then began the installation.

Installation begins

As the room hadn’t been specifically allocated for a Changing Places toilet, there was no steel structure in place for the ceiling hoist to mount to. As a result, we mounted the hoist onto a slim-line wall post system. Other pieces of equipment we installed are as follows:

  • Barella Adult, our height adjustable mobile shower trolley
  • A comfort height toilet
  • A shower
  • A flush shower tray
  • Fixed support rails either side of the toilet
  • A height adjustable wash basin with a thermostatic tap
  • A privacy screen
  • A non-slip floor
  • Accessories including a mirror, waste bins, grab rails and a paper roll dispenser

Another great success story

Despite facing a tight deadline, we managed to complete and hand over a spacious Changing Places facility, finishing a full three days ahead of schedule. This room met all the necessary approvals and regulations in time for the opening of the new David Lloyd Edinburgh Shawfair health club on 1st August 2023. We took great pleasure in bringing this project to fruition, understanding the significant benefits it will provide for individuals with disabilities and additional needs who wish to make use of the health and fitness at the club.
